'Alien: Covenant' Gets 'Eastbound & Down' Star Danny McBride

In a casting move no one expected, comedic actor Danny McBride is set to go deep into outer space as part of the Alien: Covenant exploration team. The Eastbound & Down star is in early talks with 20th Century Fox to join the Prometheus follow-up, which will be directed by Ridley Scott. The only other two actors thus far confirmed for the Alien franchise sequel are Michael Fassbender and Katherine Waterston.

Noomi Rapace, who was the main star of Prometheus, was expected to return for a cameo, but she will not participate in the production at all. Scott Free is producing this 20th Century Fox tentpole. And while Danny McBride‘s participation in the film certainly sounds unusual, his representatives are refusing to comment on the casting at this time.

Alien: Covenant follows a colony ship bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. The crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world – whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. It is expected that Danny McBride will be a part of this new exploration team. He’s death at the hands of a Xenomorph sounds likely. And it would pay homage to the 1986 classic Aliens, which killed off comedian Paul Reiser in grand fashion.

Ridley Scott has confirmed that Alien: Covenant will somehow link to Sigourney Weaver‘s Ripley. And some speculate that we will even see baby Ripley, perhaps born on the Covenant. What kind of coup would it be if Danny McBride was revealed as Ripley’s father? They do both have the same curly hair.

While Alien: Covenant is a direct follow-up to Prometheus, it is not being looked at as a sequel. Instead, it is said to be the first movie in a new Alien trilogy, with Prometheus serving as a link between all the previous films. That movie, which is being considered a standalone adventure, made $400 million worldwide.

Alien: Covenant will be one of the few films that allows Danny McBride to show off his more serious side, but if The Martian is any indication, Ridley Scott will probably allow for a few jokes. Both the director and Danny McBride are said to be cinephiles, and they hit it off while discussing old movies. Danny McBride has been quite busy lately, with the new HBO series Vice Principals set to debut at SXSW, and voice roles in two big animated adventures, The Angry Birds Movie and Sausage Party, on the horizon. What do you think? Is this perfect casting? Or is this going to be a hilarious disaster?

Alien: Covenant comes to theaters October 6th, 2017.
