Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were married in the summer of 2015 during a private ceremony in California after months of speculation as to their marital status. Now, Kutcher has explained to Ellen DeGeneres that all of that secrecy was very much planned from the start.

Kutcher went on Degeneres’ talk show ‘Ellen’ on Wednesday and the host wasted no time getting her guest to start spilling details about his secret wedding last year.

“It was a ninja effort,” the actor told Ellen. “We really didn’t want helicopters at our wedding, and it’s a legitimate concern. I was, like, posting things on social media that were in different locations to avoid it.”

Dodging helicopters isn’t something most newlyweds put on their to-do list for the big day, but for tabloid targets Kutcher and Kunis, the task was very much a reality.

“We didn’t want to be screaming our vows at each other,” Kutcher joked. “We went really under the radar with it.”

The wedding took place at The Secret Garden at Parrish Ranch in Oak Glen, California during the first week of July, according to People. The news finally broke after months of rumors about the couple, who originally met as co-stars on ‘That 70s Show’.

Late night host James Corden caused a stir in March 2015 when Kunis was a guest on his show. Corden called out the fact that Kunis was wearing a large ring and put her on the spot about it. Kunis would only say that she was “maybe” married, but Corden concluded that she and Kutcher had tied the knot. We now know that announcement was about four months early, but it made national headlines at the time.

Kutcher also talked to Ellen about being a helicopter parent to his daughter Wyatt, who was also in attendance. “She tries to kill herself on a regular basis,” Kutcher joked. “Like, she doesn’t realize that’s a cliff and could be dangerous. She’ll jump off the thing.”
