For those who came of age in the late 1990s, it’s hard to believe that the career of one Ms. Britney Spears is now approaching the start of a third decade. V Magazine landed an exclusive interview with the almost 20-year veteran of the entertainment industry for its 100th issue and after all that time in the spotlight, Spears sounds like she’s at peace with herself, criticism be damned.
“I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” the pop icon told the publication. “I kind of don’t pay attention to it. I have my relationship with God and myself and that’s what matters to me. I really don’t care what most people think.”
But Spears also contrasted her own trials in the spotlight with other celebrities who are making headlines today.
“You know, Justin Bieber, he’s huge, and he experiences that. It’s just the way the world works, unfortunately,” she said. “Whoever is in the spotlight, people are really quick to judge. I mean, there are a lot of kids coming up who’ve experienced that.”
It’s not so strange that Spears would name drop Bieber during the interview, as both stars have had to deal with some very public problems. Bieber’s offenses include getting caught on camera peeing into a restaurant mop bucket in 2013 and a DUI arrest in 2014.
Spears, of course, had her infamous meltdown in 2007 following her split from her second husband Kevin Federline after months of strange behavior. That saga ended with a shaved head and her parents receiving legal authority over her.
Those dark days are in the past now though, and even her harshest critic would have to admit she’s back to her successful ways of old. Spears is currently in residence in Las Vegas, where she performs regular shows just like Celine Dion and other famous artists who have long been associated with Sin City.
The V interview is accompanied by quite a few sexy pics. In one, Spears is clad in lingerie as she lies across the lap of a shirtless bodybuilder.
As for the future, the 34-year-old told V that she does have another album on the way but was careful not to give a specific timeline.
“We really can’t talk about it,” Spears said. “Honestly, I’m just particular with this record. It’s my baby, and so I really want it done right. … I would much rather have it be completely how I want it to be, whether that takes another year for me to do, or two months. I have no idea at this point. But I just know that the direction I’m going in is so good. It’s the best thing I’ve done in a long time. I’m proud of the work, and it’s very different; it’s not what you would think at all. But I’m not rushing anything. I just want it to be done right, so that my fans will truly appreciate it.”
