Gwen Stefani Shares the Truth About Her Relationship With Blake Shelton in a Revealing New Interview and Song

Gwen Stefani wears her heart on her sleeve in everything she does—song lyrics, as a judge on The Voice, on stage, and in her raw and revealing interviews. It’s why even though it has been 24 years since the release of No Doubt’s first album, Stefani still gives us goals to look up to in the best possible way from her career to her life attitude to how she handles breakups and falling in love all over again. With a crazy year under her belt that saw the demise of her 13-year marriage to Gavin Rossdale and the start of a fresh new romance with her The Voice co-star Blake Shelton, Stefani just got real for an interview in the New York Times. Her new solo album is called This Is What the Truth Feels Like after all, so here are five truths we’re loving from the interview:

1. The story behind why she split from Rossdale is even more crazy than we imagined. “If I could, I would just tell you everything, and you would just be in shock,” Stefani said. “It’s a really good, juicy story.” The rumor is that Rossdale cheated with the family’s nanny—but we’re fascinated to know if there is a twist to that cliched reason for so many other celebrity splits.

2. Hiding that her marriage was over? The struggle was real “I’m not a secret girl,” Stefani explained. “I tell everybody when my period is coming!”

3. Getting back to songwriting saved her post breakup. “I’m gonna die,” Stefani said of her emotional state. “I am dead, actually. How do I save myself? What am I going to do? How do I not go down like this?” I have to make music out of this. That’s what God wants for me.” Stefani went into detail how songwriting has always helped her, saying, “It’s almost like one of those movies where they discover they have magic. When I was able to first write a song, that’s when I found my whole self.”

4. She reveals what brought her and Blake Shelton together. When discussing her relationship with Shelton and what makes them work, Stefani said he “had been going through literally the exact same thing in literally the exact same time frame.” One of her songwriters, Justin Tranter, said Stefani’s relationship with Shelton changed the feel of the music she was creating. “We had anger, we had sadness, we had flirtation, we had sexy, and now we’re madly in love,” he said. Madly in love? Oh really

5. Being happy actually feels “new” to her. She says that singing about her newfound happiness is “so fresh” to her because she “needed something new to happen. And not just in my career, in my life. Something had to change. I’m not going to say I’m not still picking up the pieces and every day isn’t a challenge. I’m still in shock. But it’s an awesome time.”

And PS: Stefani just released her latest single “Misery,” and despite the title, it has to about her relationship with Shelton. First of all, didn’t she JUST reveal how her new album turned into songs about being madly in love after she connected with Shelton (see above)? And these lyrics from “Misery” pretty much sums it up for us:

“I got so used to being ’round you boy / I’m trying not to care, but where’d you go? / I’m doing my best to be sensible / I’m trying not to care/You’re like drugs, you’re like drugs to me / I’m so into you totally.”

And, do we really think that Shelton himself would have retweeted the video if it was about anyone else, namely Rossdale? But feel free to listen and decide for yourself here:
