Should Thor and His Roommate Darryl Get a Netflix Series?

Fans want another Marvel Netflix series, but this time, it isn’t going to be about fighting crime with The Defenders in Hell’s Kitchen. Fans want to see Thor and Darryl from the What Thor Was Doing During Captain America: Civil War video to get their own show. A fan petition has been started to try and get Netflix and Marvel to make it happen.

The petition was started by a fan named Ty Schmidt on Change.org, and as of this writing has more than 800 supporters. The petition has a goal of reaching 1,000 supporters, which it should easily do at the rate it is going. The plan is for Schmidt to send the petition to Marvel and Netflix in the hopes that they would pick up a Thor and Darryl series. Here is what Schmidt wrote for the petition.

“As soon as I finished watching the short on YouTube, it brought a huge smile to me. I laughed throughout the entirety of the video. Soon after, I went into the comment section, and stumbled upon a comment that said ‘Can we start a petition for this to be a Netflix Series, and I thought to myself ‘I want this to be a thing too.’ And here we are. This show, if it were to actually happen, would be one of the funniest things I would have the pleasure of watching. Please make this a reality, it would make many fans, including myself, very happy.”

The video that spawned this petition was first shown at San Diego Comic-Con, and was just recently released online for everyone to see. The video explains what Thor was doing during Captain America: Civil War, which was a question many fans had about that movie. As it turns out, Thor was just hanging out in Australia with his new roommate, Darryl. He was also volunteering at a school, trying to figure out what Cap and Tony didn’t want his help, and trying to solve the Infinity Stones mystery in the best way possible.

The video went viral, with fans absolutely adoring the humor, mostly thanks to the dynamic between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and the average everyman Darryl. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, who has a very strong comedy background, put together the video as a bit of fun for fans, since the question had been asked repeatedly about Thor’s whereabouts during Civl War. This also gives fans a window into what we may be able to expect in terms of the dynamic between Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Thor in Ragnarok ,as it has been described as “buddy cop” movie, which should have some comedic elements. It is clear Waititi knows how to handle that sort of thing.

Sadly, no matter how many signatures this petition gets, it is very unlikely that Marvel would ever actually do a Thor and Darryl show, no matter how good their relationship is with Netflix. For one, Chris Hemsworth is quite busy, and rumors have been flying around that he will be hanging up the hammer in the near future, perhaps after Avengers: Infinity War. Not only that, but Hemsworth doesn’t come cheap, and it would also potentially conflict with the real-deal continuity of the MCU. That being said, Marvel would probably have a hit on their hands if they decided to even do just a handful of short episodes. We’ll have to wait and see, but don’t hold your breath. We can see Thor next, and who knows, maybe even Darryl, in Thor: Ragnarok, which is set to hit theaters on November 3, 2017.
