'Star Trek Beyond' Reshoots Begin, Oscar Nominee Joins Cast

In the past few years, studios have tried to write off reshoots as a necessary part of the filmmaking process, especially when it comes to big blockbuster tentpole movies. It doesn’t mean the producton is in trouble. Marvel even writes reshoots into their schedule. But it sounds like there’s something a little more substantial going on with Star Trek Beyond. The movie is going to start reshoots next week. And guess what? The movie has added an all-new character.

To be fair, we’re not sure if the movie is actually adding a new character, or getting rid of an actor that didn’t work out. Deadline reports that Shohreh Aghdashloo is coming into shoot new scenes next week. She is best known for her roles in House of Sand and Fog and House of Saddam. Apparently she’s a fan of movies and TV shows that begin with House.

This third installment of producer J.J. AbramsStar Trek franchise is bringing back the main cast of the 2009 reboot and its 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are reprising their roles as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, with Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin rounding out the crew of the USS Enterprise. Newcomers include Idris Elba as the main villain, Sofia Boutella and Lydia Wilson.

Shohreh Aghdashloo will be playing the High Command of the Federation, which sounds like a pretty important role. Though, no character details have been revealed. The movie will be directed by Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin, who stepped in after J.J. Abrams bailed to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

These reshoots won’t affect the movie’s release date. Paramount still has it slotted to open on July 22, 2016. Shohreh Aghdashloo has the distinction of being the first Iranian woman to win an Emmy, which she took home in 2009 for the aforementioned House of Saddam. She will also be back for The Expanse Season 2, which beings shooting next month in Toronto. What do you think about this news?

Star Trek Beyond comes to theaters July 22nd, 2016.
