If you had to guess when the best time to score a deal on a laptop is, you’d probably be right.
Stephen Baker, an market analyst who studies laptop pricing and sales for NPD Group tells Laptop Magazine:
There is a best time to buy notebooks, and it is exactly when you think it is, between the last week in July and the first three weeks in August, when the back-to-school merchandising frenzy is in full force.
This applies to both Mac and Windows PCs.
As you can see from the charts below, there’s another common time laptop prices dip: The winter holidays shopping season.
Although the charts only show data for two specific laptops, they’re representative of the industry as a whole. Some back-to-school sales and winter holiday sales might seem like just marketing ploys and not worth waiting for, but in the laptop category, the deals are usually legit.
We mentioned this timing in our guide to getting the best price on a new laptop. Laptop Magazine also offers a few caveats and additional considerations. Older models don’t often get cheaper, for example, and, in many cases, waiting for a refreshed laptop model might not be worth it.
Of course, the best time to buy a laptop is also when you really need a new one. But if you can wait and time your purchase right, you’ll likely save money.
