When Melissa Etheridge and her former partner Julie Cypher were trying to start a family, they had their pick of creative, talented, and iconic male celebrity friends to choose from as sperm donors. They ultimately went with David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash—but they could have used their friend Brad Pitt. But, they rejected his offer to help!
Yes, you’re probably having the same reaction as we did: Why in the world would they turn down the opportunity to create a mini Brad Pitt? Why wouldn’t they want that perfect DNA to keep going? Believe it or not, there’s actually a logical and beautiful reason.
Etheridge explained on Australia’s Studio 10 talk show: “We saw how badly [Pitt] wanted children, and I thought, ‘I don’t want to share this with someone who really, badly wants children because my children don’t need another parent—they have two.'”
For the record, Etheridge’s ex-partner Cypher gave birth to two children via Crosby’s sperm—a daughter named Bailey, born in 1997, and a son named Beckett, who was born in 1998. Pitt wasn’t even married to Jennifer Aniston at that time (they wed in 2000). As we now know, everything worked out the way it was supposed to: Pitt now has six children with his current wife, Angelina Jolie. But the one person who is a little miffed at Etheridge’s decision? Her son! He told his mom, “I could have had Brad Pitt [as my dad]! I could’ve been amazingly handsome.”
