If you lose a limb you have a few options. You can replace it with a stationary hook or peg, a semi-functional mechanical claw, or a 3D printed abstract art piece.
Or if you’re really creepy, a ventriloquist dummy.
California resident Ruben Carol saw those options and said “I’d rather just to something funny.”
And funny he did …
Like a good Adam Sandler film or a bad Seth Rogan film, that prosthetic makes me want to both laugh and vomit. It’s dark, sure but I really respect Carol for taking a gallows humor approach to his injury. It takes a certain type of person to get hit by a car and then a truck, only to be dragged 30-feet by that same truck before being run over and then walk (hop?) out of the whole situation with an increased sense of humor. If Carol isn’t a bad ass, I don’t know who is.
“Humour is important in everyone’s life. Look, when something like this happens to you, you have two choices, you can cry about it and feel sorry for yourself for the rest of your life (which is not going to bring your limb back) or you can take it as a learning experience for how valuable life is. Humour is a big part of that. When amputees get in a group, believe me, we can take the piss out of each other. We say things that would make other cringe. Because we can. If someone who wasn’t an amputee said some of these things, they could be offensive.” – Ruben Carol
Carol is a public speaker and actor by night and by day he works for Magnum, which is a company that supplies trauma casualty simulation amputee actors to really, anyone who needs that type of thing.
Just another day at the office.
If you need proof that losing a limb isn’t the end of your sense of humor, look no further than Ruben Carol.
