Kate Middleton slayed the Royal Ascot’s opening day yesterday (June 20) in a white-lace dress that served major 2011 wedding vibes. But the highlight of the day wasn’t the Duchess of Cambridge’s dress, but a candid photo moment that has now gone viral. Photographers snapped Middleton literally catching Sophie, Countess of Wessex, after she tripped climbing into a very fancy carriage. A picture is worth a thousand words, so check it out (below), and then we can discuss.
Here’s the story behind this pic, according to Vogue: Middleton, the Countess, Prince William, and Prince Edward were all scheduled to take a carriage ride together in between the horse-race festivities (as royals do). Everyone managed to hop onto the carriage with no issue, but the Countess lost her footing. And that’s when paparazzi started taking pics.
This photograph is instantly iconic for many reasons: Middleton’s genuinely surprised reaction, for one. The wide eyes, the gaping mouth—she’s basically all of us catching our slightly tipsy (and stumbling) BFFs at happy hour. The Countess’ face is pretty great, too. I mean, who hasn’t accidentally fallen on top of a literal duchess at the Royal Ascot? She’s so relatable! It’s only a matter of time before the social media memes pour in.
…Actually, why wait? We’ll get the ball rolling on that ourselves:
When you help your best friend put on a pair of jeans she just took out of the dryer:
When you bump into a complete stranger in an airplane aisle:
When the train takes off before you grab hold of a handle.
It’s official: Kate Middleton is all of us.
