For Today in Robot Apocalypse we go to Russia where it is not the robots, but people using robots we have to worry about.
Last week we learned that Russia is building a giant nuclear weapon ominously nicknamed the “Satan 2” that could take out an area the size of Texas. Now Russian President Vladimir Putin is really upping the race to World War 3 with a new piece of military hardware some people are referring to as a “superweapon.” The MRP-300 developed by the Russian defense ministry is a robotic caterpillar from our nightmares.
While officially it is being billed as a rescue robot, used to help soldiers in rescue missions in Syria to defuse bombs or help the wounded, Western intelligence fears it could also be used as an offensive weapon in combat. A video of the machine shows it firing off a few rounds:
The new robot is capable of scaling walls, reaching speeds of up to 15 miles per hour and terrifying people who grew up watching robot apocalypse movies. Russian military officials demonstrated the new robots capability of hauling hundreds of pounds of gear. In addition to these “rescue” capabilities the robot has radiation detectors in case of nuclear explosion. Um, Vlad? Was a priority for the new robot?
Oleg Zheltonozhko told reporters that the robot is “For rescue, demining and chemical reconnaissance robots working amid the rubble of a combat damaged city, high cross-country capacity is of paramount importance.”
While for now the robot is manually operated, we can only imagine what a future generation of the MRP-300 will be capable of. Perhaps the MRP-1000 will be self-sufficient, able to detect and destroy “western capitalist scum” all on its own.
Do you think this new Russian robotic killing machine will give Putin a strategic advantage over the US?
