Zack Snyder Explains Why Grant Gustin's Flash Isn't in 'Justice League'

While Warner Bros.’ DC Comics Extended Universe doesn’t fully kick off until this weekend’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s quite obvious the studio is doing things much different than their Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart. The movies are much darker, eschewing the lighter tone of the MCU, but another major difference is that Warner Bros. and DC are keeping its film and TV universes separate. After The CW’s hit series The Flash debuted in 2014, many fans wanted to see Grant Gustin transition as the Scarlet Speedster to the big screen, but the studio chose Ezra Miller to play Barry Allen in the two-part Justice League movie, and The Flash stand alone movie. Justice League director Zack Snyder revealed in an interview with New York Daily News that Grant Gustin just didn’t fit into this world.

“I just don’t think it was a good fit. I’m very strict with this universe and I just don’t see a version where…that (tone is) not our world. Even if Grant Gustin is my favorite guy in the world and he’s very good, we made a commitment to the multi-verse (idea), so it’s just not a thing that’s possible.”

Oddly enough, Warner Bros. revealed their massive DC Extended Universe in mid-October 2014, which included the announcement of Ezra Miller as The Flash. The announcement was just one week after The Flash TV series had debuted on The CW. The show is currently in the midst of its second season, and as its popularity kept growing, many fans of the show started bashing Ezra Miller, which lead to Grant Gustin issuing a statement on his Twitter page, asking for fans to stop lashing out at the actor.

The Flash movie will most likely fall in line with the darker tone of the DCEU, and while The Flash TV series certainly has its fair share of dark moments, there are plenty of light-hearted moments as well. Even if the director did want Grant Gustin to star, the shooting schedule of both the Justice League movies and The Flash adventure would likely conflict with the TV series in some way. We’ll have to wait and see if fans of the show will eventually embrace Ezra Miller as the big-screen Barry Allen or not.

We’ll get our first look at Ezra Miller‘s Barry Allen/The Flash in this weekend’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, along with his fellow Justice League members Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Production is scheduled to begin on April 11 on Justice League Part 1, although we don’t know when shooting will begin on The Flash movie yet, which will be directed by Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). Would you still like to see Grant Gustin‘s Barry Allen on the big screen, or do you think Ezra Miller is a better fit?

Justice League Part 1 comes to theaters November 17th, 2017.

The Flash comes to theaters March 16th, 2018.
