When it comes to understanding technology, millennials are at the top of the pack – and when it comes to abusing it in a way that’ll bite us in the ass later, we’re still at the tip of the totem pole. We may be smart enough to torrent games on our work computers without getting caught, but it wouldn’t be out of the question for us to email our boss bragging about it either. In other words, we are intelligent morons.
Take Katelyn Rust, for example.
Katelyn is a cute member of Pi Beta Phi at Ohio State. Katelyn, for whatever reason, decided to film herself going on a racist tirade against her ex-boyfriend, raving “F*** yourself you are hooking up with a black girl. That’s weird. That’s weird as f***. F*** you.” Katelyn should know that it’s 2017 and filming yourself doing anything, even if it’s something as simple as curling your hair…
…will probably bite you in the ass later. This is no exception.
The subject of Katelyn’s anger, Aleigha Mason, a freshman at Miami University Ohio, went and posted the video to Twitter. Unsurprisingly, all hell broke loose for Katelyn:
The video was clearly meant to only be seen by Katelyn’s ex-boyfriend, yet somehow made its way to Aleigha. Speaking to student paper The Lantern, Aleigha said “I didn’t even know she existed until today. I danced with her ex-boyfriend and for what I understand that’s why she made that video. I just want her to understand that her comments are hurtful and not okay.”
It wasn’t until after Katelyn’s rant went viral, however, that she apologized for the video in the following statement provided to The Lantern:
“First and foremost racism is wrong. I, in no way, think that anyone is less of a person than anyone else because of their skin color, nationality, religion, sexual preference or otherwise and sincerely apologize for all the words in this twitter video.
“I have personally apologized to the young woman who posted this video and explained that my weird reference had nothing to do with her skin color. I was quite simply very hurt, and angry with an ex-boyfriend and jealous of her. Nothing more.
“Again, I say in the strongest possible terms that racism is despicable and I apologize for any hurt or pain this tweet caused this young woman or anyone else. I sincerely ask for forgiveness from this young women (sic), the OSU student body, faculty and alumni family.”
Translation: I am sorry I got caught being a racist twat. Please let me fade back into obscurity so that my future employers will not find these news stories upon Googling my name. But, given the opportunity to drop racial slurs with soft-R’s and become completely unhinged after a minority cuts me off in traffic, you better hold onto your butts because I WILL LOSE MY SHIT…off-camera, of course.
Sorry to break it to you Katelyn, but it’s too late for apologies — your name is screwed already. The only solution at this point is changing it to something no one would ever associate with racism, like Jamie Crowe or Roberta E. Lee.
In the end, Aleigha was kind enough to delete the video off of her Twitter, posting the following as her reason why:
What do you think – should Aleigha have kept the video up in order to teach Katelyn a lesson, or was this the “mature” way to handle things? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
