Doomsday Clock Advanced To 2 ½ Minutes To Midnight: 1st Time Since Cold War

The fun folks at The Bulletin of The Atomic Scientists are always pulling whacky pranks on everyone with their “human civilization might end if we use nuclear weapons” scare tactics. Just look at these couple of goofs as they inform the public during a press conference that they have moved the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock thirty seconds closer to Midnight.

As you may recall The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic measurement of possible global catastrophe. “Midnight” represents a global, civilization ending event and the closer the minute hand gets to it, the closer we are to having one.

 Created in 1947 by scientists to measure the threat of global nuclear war, the clock now also includes other factors that could lead to a Doomsday scenario. These factors include the threat of new technologies (killer robots?) and the effects of climate change. At least everyone can agree those are serious issues. #AltFacts

Side note: once you listen to this Iron Maiden song you can never hear the phrase “Two Minutes to Midnight” without singing “Two! Minutes! To Miiiiiidniiiight!”

The farthest away from “Midnight” the clock has ever been was in 1991 with the fall of The Soviet Union and the singing of the first Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty aiming to put a curb on things that go BOOM. However, now the scientists are moving it the closest to Midnight it has been since 1953 when the United States and The Soviet Union began testing hydrogen bombs. This is also the first time it has leapt forward by 30 seconds. At the National Press Club on Thursday executive director and publisher of the Bulletin of The Atomic Scientists, Rachel Bronson said;

“Over the course of 2016, the global security landscape darkened as the international community failed to come effectively to grips with humanity’s most pressing existential threats, nuclear weapons and climate change … This already-threatening world situation was the backdrop for a rise in strident nationalism worldwide in 2016, including in a U.S. presidential campaign during which the eventual victor, Donald Trump, made disturbing comments about the use and proliferation of nuclear weapons and expressed disbelief in the overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change.”

I guess if the world is going to end from climate change, then what difference does it make if we blow it up first with nuclear weapons, right scientists?!
